Top Experiences to Explore Beyond Grenada Carnival

If you’re planning your trip in August around Grenada Carnival, you’re in for an unforgettable trip. But here’s the thing.  Your Carnival adventure doesn’t have to end when the parades stop.  Beyond the revelry, Grenada offers rich cultural, culinary, and natural experiences that can add even more depth to your getaway.  And we’re sharing some of them in this post.  Think of this as your guide to exploring and seeing other sides of the Spice Island.

Outdoor Adventures

If Grenada Carnival energy leaves you craving something calmer, the island’s natural beauty is ready to welcome you.  You can start easy with a tour of Laura’s Herb & Spice Garden.  See the growing process, how things are harvested, processed and even how spices are used.  Meanwhile, if you’re feeling more adventurous, head to Grand Etang National Park for a hike to the volcanic crater lake surrounded by lush rainforest.  The area is home to vibrant birdlife, Mona monkeys and other wildlife.

Another way to explore Grenada’s natural beauty is by visiting one of the waterfalls on the island.  Two options to consider are Annandale Falls or Concord Falls.  Both are surrounded by lush greenery, cool mountain breezes and emerald pools, perfect for a refreshing dip.

On the other hand, if water activities are more your speed, there’s the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park, the world’s first underwater gallery. Here life-sized statues rest on the ocean floor in an area now thriving with coral and marine life.  Take a snorkel or scuba excursion to explore this amazing habitat.  Interested in the stories behind some of the sculptures?  Find more information here

For something closer to shore, look no further than Grand Anse Beach.  Here you can relax while you enjoy the beautiful white sand beaches and stunning turquoise water.  There’s a reason it’s consistently rated as one of the best beaches in the world!

Spices and Other Culinary Treats

While in Grand Anse, be sure to head to the Grand Anse Craft & Spice Market.  Here you’ll find stalls overflowing with nutmeg, mace, cinnamon, and turmeric, alongside local produce and handmade crafts (a convenient way to pick up souvenirs and gifts).  Wander through the market, chat with the artisans, and take in the vibrant colors and scents.

If all that browsing makes you hungry, the food stalls nearby hve you covered.  A must-try dish is oil down, Grenada’s national dish.  It’s a hearty one-pot meal made with breadfruit, salted meat, callaloo, and coconut milk, slow-simmered to perfection.  Another local favorite is lambie souse, which is conch cooked with herbs, citrus, and vegetables.  These dishes are soul food Grenada-style: flavorful and comforting.

Here’s something you might not know: Grenada was the first country in the world designated as an Accredited Culinary Capital by the World Food Travel Association.  This recognition highlights the island’s vibrant food culture — worth exploring whether you grab a bite at a roadside shop or indulge in a fine dining gem.

Pro Tip

Any chocolate lovers in the house?  Grenada is also a producer of high quality chocolates.  Check out the Belmont Estate Chocolate tour for an immersion in chocolate making from tree to bar.

Grenada Carnival may be the island’s biggest party, but what makes the trip unforgettable is pairing the revelry with the island’s richness. From snorkeling through underwater art and hiking volcanic lakes to savoring the delicious cuisine, Grenada offers something for every traveler. These experiences balance Grenada Carnival’s high-energy vibe with opportunities to slow down, savor, and connect more deeply with the island’s people, traditions, and natural beauty.
